This week in State Parliament – 27 October 2016
In State Parliament this week, Liberal and Nationals MPs called for the Minister for Corrections, Steve Herbert, to be dismissed for repeatedly misusing his Ministerial car to take his pet dogs to his holiday home, and for verbally abusing his Ministerial driver to the point she has had to take stress leave.
We highlighted the government’s soft approach and loss of control in juvenile justice centres, including offering inmates pizza and coke to end their riots, and letting them play a violent video game involving ramming police cars.
We opposed the government’s move to extend the growth areas infrastructure charge on the development of new housing lots, which will further worsen housing affordability.
We called on the government to re-write its proposed new laws on medical treatment to remove dangerous flaws and protect against elder abuse and other unintended consequences.
We questioned the government over delays and inadequacies in its new community correction sentencing laws and its failure to increase sentences for serious crimes.
We also supported a motion in the Legislative Council calling on the government to withdraw its so-called “Safe Schools” program, and committed if elected to scrap it and replace it with a genuine anti-bullying program.
