Labor walks away from two more election promises
The Andrews Government has walked away from two more election promises, with Treasurer Tim Pallas refusing to commit to Labor’s metro rail tunnel promise, and also refusing to rule out new taxes or charges.
Before the election, Labor said “While the realisation of the full project will require partnership with the Commonwealth Government and the private sector…Melbourne Metro Rail will happen under Victorian Labor.” (“Project 10,000”, p.26) Now Labor say that the project “w…ill be difficult to put away” and try to blame the Commonwealth.
Before the election, when asked whether there would be any higher taxes or levies under Labor, Daniel Andrews said ” no increases and … I have no intention of introducing new charges” (Frankston “People’s Forum”, 19 Nov). Now Mr Pallas says Labor didn’t promise not to raise taxes, they only promised not to raise taxes to pay for their election promises!
