State delivers on its promise for a new pedestrian footbridge at the Box Hill Cemetery
State Government will deliver on a key commitment to build a new pedestrian footbridge at the Box Hill Cemetery and providing a safe crossing of the railway line, the Minister for Public Transport, Terry Mulder announced today.
Mr Mulder said the project involves the construction of a new pedestrian footbridge bridge and associated ramps to reinstate access between the Cemetery and Sagoe Lane and Whitehorse Reserve.
“The Victorian Government is meeting its commitment to the community to build a pedestrian footbridge at the Box Hill Cemetery,” Mr Mulder said.
“The works involve the construction of a new steel truss structure bridge with associated ramps that will provide a safe and accessible crossing over the railway line,” Mr Mulder said.
“An at-grade pedestrian crossing was removed in 2007 with the Middleborough Road Grade Separation project.”
The State Member for Box Hill and the Attorney General, Robert Clark, welcomed the start of works that will deliver a much-needed crossing over the railway line at the Box Hill Cemetery.
“Local pleas for the return of a safe crossing of the railway line have been answered by the start of this Victorian Government footbridge project,” Mr Clark said
“For the first time since the Middleborough Road Grade Separation project, the local community will have a safe crossing of the railway line near the Cemetery.”
“With the construction of a new footbridge at the Cemetery, families visiting the graves of loved ones can again utilise parking on Sagoe Lane,” Mr Clark said.
“The pathway through the Cemetery is also used by students and the public who will again have access over the railway line.”
Mr Clark said the project was strongly supported by the Box Hill Cemetery Trust, the Whitehorse Club Ltd, St Francis Xavier Parish, the Box Hill High School and the Greek Orthodox Community of Box Hill and District Inc.
Works would commence in late March and are expected to be completed by the end of July.
Mr Mulder said the Public Transport Victoria Project was being managed by VicTrack, on behalf of the Victorian Government.
VicTrack is a self-funded state-owned business that provides a wide range of communications, property management and project delivery services in support of Victoria’s public transport system.
