Safety upgrade for busy Surrey Hills intersection
State Member for Box Hill, Robert Clark, today announced $246,000 in funding to make a Surrey Hills intersection safer as part of this year’s Safer Roads Infrastructure Program (SRIP).
Mr Clark said the intersection of Canterbury and Union Roads will be upgraded to address a history of crashes at this location.
“To help reduce the likelihood of crashes, a fully controlled right turn from Canterbury Road into Union Road will be introduced during off-peak times and weekends,” Mr Clark said.
“Currently there is a partially-controlled right turn in place at this location, meaning when the light is green and there is no arrow, motorists can attempt to select gaps in the traffic to turn right.
“A fully-controlled right turn means they can only turn when the arrow is green, which minimises the risk of right-turners colliding with oncoming traffic,” he explained.
“Further to the traffic signal upgrade, LED signage will also be installed to alert right-turning vehicles to potential delays caused by trains at the Union Road level crossing,” Mr Clark said.
In the most recent five-year period, three casualty crashes were recorded at these intersections, with two causing serious injury.
The funding is provided by the Transport Accident Commission (TAC) through the Safer Roads Infrastructure Program and is part of a 10-year commitment of $650 million.
