CCTV cameras improve safety in Box Hill

· New cameras switched on in Box Hill
· Labor has removed crime prevention portfolio from shadow ministry
· Napthine Government building a safer Victoria

New CCTV cameras in Box Hill will increase community safety and help police monitor activity centres and crime hot spots in the area.

Minister for Crime Prevention Edward O’Donohue today viewed the newly-installed cameras with Attorney-General and Member for Box Hill Robert Clark and Member for Eastern Metropolotan Region Bruce Atkinson.

Mr O’Donohue said the Napthine Government had delivered on its election commitment to expand the CCTV camera network to the precinct around the Box Hill gardens and hospital.

“The Coalition Government provided $250,000 in funding through its Community Crime Prevention Program for the City of Whitehorse to install nine cameras and upgrade CCTV infrastructure in Box Hill,” Mr O’Donohue said.

“CCTV cameras are an effective deterrent for those seeking to vandalise public property, commit crimes, and engage in anti-social behaviour in our streets and parks.

“The cameras can also make a real difference by assisting police in preventing, detecting and investigating crimes.”

Mr Clark said the expansion of the Whitehorse City Council CCTV network will support a safer community and build on the existing network of cameras around the Box Hill shopping district and laneways.

“Helping tackle anti-social behaviour and crime in the area is fundamentally important to supporting local businesses and building the community’s confidence to use public space,” Mr Clark said.

Nine cameras have been installed at six locations within and around the Box Hill gardens precinct, including:

  • The corner of Whitehorse Road and Elgar Road;
  • The corner of Elgar Road and Arnold Street;
  • Nelson Road (x 2);
  • The corner of Nelson Road and Whitehorse Road;
  • Box Hill Gardens (x 3); and
  • Bruce Street.

The cameras are owned and maintained by council, with live footage streamed to new monitoring facilities at the Box Hill Police Station.

“Delivery of this $250,000 election commitment will boost safety for people using Box Hill Gardens or going to and from the hospital, TAFE or the Box Hill shopping centre,” Mr Clark said.

“The installation of the CCTV systems will help create a safer environment for the people of Box Hill, with police able to monitor and control cameras as well as review footage of incidents.

“The Coalition Government is committed to enabling communities to address local crime and safety problems.”

Mr O’Donohue noted that a frontbench reshuffle by Daniel Andrews late last year saw the crime prevention portfolio removed from the shadow ministry.

“There could be no starker indication of how little Labor cares about community safety and community crime prevention,” Mr O’Donohue said.
