“Australia Calls” shows local World War One heritage
A fascinating exhibition of the City of Whitehorse’s World War One heritage is now on display at the Box Hill Town Hall.
“Australia Calls” features a wonderful collection of diaries, photographs, newspaper extracts, poetry, artefacts and memorabilia, with touching accounts both from those who fought first hand and from those who contributed to the war effort back home in the old Shire of Nunawading, now the City of Whitehorse.
I was privileged to attend the exhibition’s launch this afternoon, along with local Federal MPs Michael Sukkar and Anna Burke.
A highlight was meeting Eric Metcher, whose grandfather, Lieutenant Ormond Frederick Metcher, served with the 1st Light Horse Brigade. He embarked from Melbourne on HMAT Karroo on 20 October 1914 and returned to Australia on 5 March 1919. Included in the pictures below are Lieutenant Metcher’s identification disc and personal diary from the Gallipoli campaign, along with other items from the exhibition.
The exhibition runs from 10 September to the 14 October 2015 in the Whitehorse Artspace at the Box Hill Town Hall. For more information, see the exhibition details at http://bit.ly/1Q5aQgk. #ANZAC100
