New appointment to the Victorian Law Reform Commission

Attorney-General Robert Clark today announced David Jones AM has been appointed as a member of the Victorian Law Reform Commission, effective from 1 March for a period of three years.

Mr Jones will also serve as acting chairperson of the Commission following the completion by Professor Neil Rees of his term as chairperson, until a new chairperson is appointed.

Mr Clark said Mr Jones, a retired judge of the County Court, would bring a wealth of experience to the position.

“Mr Jones has served for the past 10 years on the Adult Parole Board and on various committees within the Department of Justice. Most recently, he led an independent inquiry into arrangements for CFA volunteers,” Mr Clark said.

“Mr Jones’ work as Special Investigations Monitor between 2004 and 2009 demonstrated a high level of commitment to upholding proper processes in relation to the investigation of serious crime.”

Mr Clark thanked Professor Rees for his dedicated, diligent and able service to the community throughout his five-year term at the VLRC.

“Professor Rees has overseen extensive and detailed reports on issues including bail, civil justice, jury directions, child protection, public surveillance, property laws and most recently Victoria’s guardianship laws,” Mr Clark said.

“The Victorian community has been fortunate to benefit from Professor Rees’ ability, experience and commitment.

“I wish Professor Rees every success in his future activities and I congratulate Mr Jones on his appointment to the VLRC.”
