Australia remembers those who died in war
Last week, Australians paused at 11am on 11th November, to remember Australian service men and service women who have died in military conflict on behalf of our nation.
Australia, like Britain and many other countries, pauses at that time because it was at 11am on 11th November 1918 that the armistice commenced that marked the end of fighting in World War 1.
The red poppy is the symbol of this remembrance, because red poppies grew in the fields of Flanders where so many soldiers of World War I died and were buried.
The terrible events in Paris over the weekend show that Australia and the rest of the civilized world still have enemies, so we also remember those Australians who are serving today in our army, navy or air force to help defend us from barbarism.
