Daniel Andrews must heed John Cain’s union warning

With Friday’s rail shutdown looming, the Andrews government needs to learn from the damage caused by union leaders under the Cain government in the 1980s.

John Cain warns of what happened in his memoirs:

“…some of the unions regard a Labor government as there to be milked- they wanted everything they could get from it while it lasted.

“…we received a continuing string of claims about wages and conditions of employment in the public sector… Our political affinity was used against us.

“Naked political pressure was brought to bear on the government at the instigation of various key unions through their factional heavies.”

Unfortunately, it’s even worse today. John Cain as Premier at least tried to stand up to outrageous union demands. Daniel Andrews has come to office owing huge IOUs to the union leaders who got him elected.

Premier Andrews urgently needs to tear up those IOUs and put the interests of ordinary Victorians first.
