New footbridge opens to Box Hill Cemetery
The Victorian Coalition Government has delivered on its commitment to the local community with the opening of a new footbridge at the Box Hill Cemetery to provide an accessible and safe railway crossing, Minister for Public Transport Terry Mulder announced today.
Mr Mulder said the project involved the construction of the new footbridge and the associated ramps to reconnect access between the Box Hill Cemetery, Sagoe Lane and Whitehorse Reserve.
“The Coalition Government has met its commitment to the community to build a footbridge at the Box Hill Cemetery, restoring access across the Belgrave/Lilydale railway line,” Mr Mulder said.
“The works involved the construction of a new steel truss structure bridge with associated ramps for people of all abilities that will provide a safe and accessible crossing.
“A pedestrian crossing was removed in 2007 with the Middleborough Road Grade Separation project.”
Local Member for Box Hill Robert Clark welcomed the completion of the much needed crossing.
“Pleas from the local community for the return of a safe railway crossing into the Box Hill Cemetery have now been answered with the completion of this project,” Mr Clark said.
“With the restoration of the crossing at the Cemetery, families and friends visiting the final resting place of loved ones will once again be able to use parking along Sagoe Lane.”
Mr Clark said the project was strongly supported by the Box Hill Cemetery Trust, the Whitehorse Club Ltd, St Francis Xavier Parish, the Box Hill High School and the Greek Orthodox Community of Box Hill and District Inc.
Mr Mulder said the Public Transport Victoria works were managed by VicTrack on behalf of the Coalition Government.
Works were carried out between March and August this year.
