Investigations progress for the Blackburn Level Crossing Removal Project

Traffic flow and safety benefits are a step closer for Blackburn, with early works progressing on the Blackburn Road Level Crossing Removal Project, Minister for Public Transport Terry Mulder announced today.

“This is an exciting time for this project. Last week we announced the opening of the expressions of interest for the main construction task of removing the level crossing at Blackburn Road, and today service proving works will begin to ensure the site is prepared,” Mr Mulder said.

“While the project has been in planning for some time, the locals of Blackburn will now start to see some physical works on site.

“Early works will include investigating and verifying ground services along the corridor such as gas, electricity, water and telecommunications.”

Member for Box Hill Robert Clark said major construction to remove the Blackburn Road level crossing would start in mid-2016 and be complete in mid-2017.

“Removing this level crossing is a win for everyone and will benefit motorists, pedestrians, cyclists and public transport users and create a safer and more efficient environment for everyone,” Mr Clark said.

“The improved connectivity that will result from removing this level crossing will lead to a more vibrant and prosperous Blackburn community.”

The contract is expected to be awarded in April 2015.

Mr Mulder said the project at Blackburn is part of the $1 billion Metro Level Crossing Blitz, which is being delivered and managed by VicRoads in partnership with Public Transport Victoria and in close cooperation with Metro Trains Melbourne.
