Calligraphy exhibition shows writing as art

A wonderful exhibition of Chinese calligraphy officially opened in Box Hill this evening. The exhibition features works of Madam Zhi-Cheng Zhong, a renowned Chinese calligrapher, and her students.

Chinese calligraphy is about more than writing. It is an art form that uses Chinese characters to communicate the spiritual world of the artist. The elevated status of calligraphy reflects the importance of the written word in Chinese culture.

To practise calligraphy requires the basic tools of ‘four treasures of study’ (writing brush, ink stick, paper, and ink slab) as well as much concentration on guiding the soft writing brush charged with fluid ink, and writing on the paper where the ink will diffuse quickly. Once the brush movement hesitates, a black mark is created, so speed, strength and agility is the essence of fine artwork.

Madam Zhong is living in Australia and has taught Chinese calligraphy for more than 20 years to hundreds of students. The exhibition is being held at the Wesley Church in Oxford Street, Box Hill until Tuesday next week.
