Labor moves to repeal move-on laws – another payoff for CFMEU

Today’s Herald-Sun editorial has rightly condemned Daniel Andrews’ move to repeal move-on laws that allow police to take action to end unlawful blockades and pickets:

“THE decision by Victoria’s Labor Government to repeal the “move-on” laws designed to assist police in breaking up unruly protests is not as puzzling as it might appear.

It requires no stretch of the imagination to see the hand of the state’s more militant unions in encouraging the Government to make it a priority in the first sitting week of the new Parliament.

The CFMEU, which has members within Premier Daniel Andrews’ own Socialist Left faction, has repeatedly clashed with police on picket lines and has no desire to see police given extra powers.

The “move-on’’ laws were passed by the Napthine government following widespread disruption on the Melbourne Emporium and East West Link construction sites, costing taxpayers millions of dollars in police time…

Victoria Police has powers to remove protesters causing disruption, but it has been slow to do so, prompting the decision of the former Coalition government to introduce the move-on laws.

Their removal will only encourage police to stand by at future protests when they get out of hand. This would be a risk to public safety as well as excusing union thuggery.”
