Beware of telephone imposters
Victorians should beware of imposters claiming to be from the Australian Taxation Office (ATO), and pressuring people to make payments to them.
Recently, many people have been receiving emails or phone calls claiming to be from the taxation office, and threatening court action, arrest or even imprisonment if they don’t pay a “debt” it is claimed they owe to the taxation office.
The person who is contacted is told they need to provide credit card details and other personal information, or to make a payment via wire transfer.
Be aware that the Australian Taxation Office never phones people about a debt without having contacted them first by a letter or a text message. If you have any doubt about a contact that claims to be from the ATO, you can check whether it is genuine by calling the ATO switchboard on 132 869.
