Crime problems continue
Crime problems have continued in Victoria. It was reported on Sunday that the young offenders who bashed an elderly couple in their own home were let off by the Children’s Court on probation and without any conviction.
If this report is accurate, it is not surprising that the law gets treated with contempt and juvenile crime gangs think they can do what they like.
On the same day, it was reported that the government is going to make some changes to how child protection services handle young people who live in government provided care.
Many of these young people have been taken away from families where the parents are violent, or drug or alcohol addicted. However, there is no real control over them in government care, so they learn to defy the authorities and commit crimes.
To reduce child abuse and crime, the law needs to require both adults and young people to accept more responsibility for their own behaviour.
