Beware of “button” batteries with children

Authorities have issued a warning about the dangers of “button” batteries for children.

These are the small batteries that can be found in remote controls, watches, calculators, singing greeting cards and other electronic devices.

If one of these button-sized batteries is swallowed, there is a chemical reaction between saliva and the battery that causes an electrical current which can burn through the oesophagus in as little as two hours, causing severe injuries and possible death. Children aged under five are most at risk.

Everyone who has or looks after young children needs to know about this danger. If a child swallows a button battery, they should be taken to an emergency department immediately.
