Protests against Skyrail continue

Anger continues about the State government’s “Skyrail” proposals to remove level crossings by using three-storey high elevated tracks that will run for many kilometres through built-up suburbs.

Some supporters have argued that Skyrail is similar to the elevated tracks that have existed for many years in inner suburbs such as Hawthorn.

However, those tracks are not built on high pylons, but on earth embankments that rise gradually until they are just high enough for the track to cross the road. As well, these embankments often have trees and other vegetation planted along them to provide a pleasant view.

As well, many of the tracks on earth embankments were constructed before the nearby buildings were built. This meant people could design their buildings to face away from the elevated tracks. With Skyrail, owners of nearby homes and businesses will suddenly find railway lines built high above ground right in front of their windows.
