Higher taxes in State budget
Car buyers and property owners are being charged higher taxes in this year’s Victorian budget.
About $300 will be added to the cost of a $30,000 new car, with the tax rate increasing from 3.2% to 4.2%.
Property owners will be forced to pay land tax increases more often, because their land will be revalued for tax every year, instead of every two years. As well, families will be required to pay stamp duty in future on many transfers of property from one spouse to another.
These latest tax increases come on top of previous increases in land tax and stamp duty on overseas property purchasers, and increased tax on coal used for electricity.
All of these tax increases are a broken promise by Premier Daniel Andrews, who promised before the 2014 election that he would not increase any taxes.
