Government won’t provide details of $5.5b project

The Andrews government is refusing to provide details of its proposed $5.5 billion Western Distributor project to Infrastructure Australia, the national expert body that assesses major infrastructure projects.

The Western Distributor is a road and tunnel proposed to run from the Westgate freeway across to CityLink north of the Bolte Bridge.

Much of the cost of the very expensive project will be paid for by charging years more of extra tolls on motorists who use the existing CityLink freeway.

There are concerns that the Western Distributor will do little to help reduce traffic congestion, but will allow the CityLink operator, Transurban, to make huge profits from the deal.

Premier Andrews should allow details of this project to be independently assessed, instead of keeping those details secret.
