First home buyers at risk of $15,500 stamp duty increase

The Age newspaper reports the Andrews government is looking at hitting first home buyers with stamp duty increases of up to $15,500.

This is despite repeated promises before the election that a Labor government would not increase taxes.

Young families are finding it hard enough already to afford to buy their first home, without having to cope with an extra $15,500 slug. That’s why the Liberal-National government introduced lower stamp duty for first home buyers in the first place.

If Premier Andrews and his government didn’t waste $20 million on a new logo, or tens of millions of dollars on an unnecessary re-shuffle of government departments, then they wouldn’t need to be looking at tax increases like this.
