Liberal leader promises stronger laws

Victorian Liberal Party leader, Matthew Guy, has announced that a Liberal government will make two important changes to the law to help tackle drive-by shootings and car thefts.

First, a Victorian Liberal government will create a new criminal offence for firing a gun from a vehicle in a way that endangers safety. Those who commit this new offence will face a minimum of five years in jail and a maximum sentence of 15 years.

Secondly, traders who buy cars for scrap metal will be required to confirm from an official online database that the car has not been stolen, and they must pay for the purchase by electronic funds transfer, not by cash.

This will mean gangs can no longer make money by stealing cars and selling them for wrecking or scrap metal to unscrupulous dealers for cash.

When criminals defy the law, governments need to act to make the law stronger, and that is what a Liberal government will do if re-elected in Victoria.
