Victoria needs more police

The number of police in Victoria has increased much more slowly over the last four years than over the previous four years. This is despite the fact that violent crime has increased by 17.6% since the end of 2014.

Official figures released last week show that between 2014 and 2018, the increase in the number of police and protective services offices in Victoria was only 55% of the increase between 2010 and 2014.

In some areas, the number of frontline police is actually lower than in 2014, because many police have been transferred from frontline work to serve in specialist squads.

To make Victoria safe again, we need more police and stronger laws to deter crime, catch criminals and lock them up for longer.
