Rush to desalination means higher water prices
The State government has today announced it’s going to start taking water from the Wonthaggi desalination plant, with water bills to rise to pay for it. Yet Melbourne’s water storages are still two-thirds full and we’re not even on water restrictions.
Today’s announcement seems more about trying to justify the amount the previous Labor government wasted on an oversized desalination plant, which ended being hijacked by the CFMEU and is already costing Melbourne water users almost $2 million a day even before any water is taken.
Decisions like today’s should be made in Victoria’s best long term interests, not for short-term political positioning.
