New appointment to the Magistrates’ Court
Attorney-General Robert Clark today announced the appointment of Ian Alger to the Magistrates’ Court of Victoria.
Mr Clark said Mr Alger brought a wide variety of experience to the bench, including 15 years as a barrister.
“Mr Alger has a strong practice in criminal law and has also worked in family and civil law, providing a strong background for service as a Magistrate,” Mr Clark said.
Prior to taking up law, Mr Alger worked as a telecommunications technician before serving with Victoria Police for 20 years, rising to the rank of Sergeant.
In 1988, he commenced work as a police prosecutor and continued to work in the police prosecutions division until leaving Victoria Police to join the Bar.
Mr Alger completed a Bachelor of Laws with Honours at Monash University in 1995, commenced articles with the Victorian Government Solicitors Office in 1996 and joined the Bar in 1998.
Mr Alger has also worked as a volunteer supervisor with the Springvale Monash Legal Service and has served as an assessor and moot court judge for the Bar Readers Course.
“I congratulate Mr Alger on his appointment and wish him every success in his new role with the Magistrates’ Court,” Mr Clark said.
