New appointment to the Court of Appeal

Attorney-General Robert Clark today announced the appointment of the Honourable Justice David Beach as a judge of the Court of Appeal.

Mr Clark said Justice Beach brought significant experience to the Court of Appeal, particularly in relation to common law matters, following his service as a Supreme Court judge in the trial division and previously as a barrister for 24 years.

Justice Beach was admitted to practice in 1983 and signed the Victorian Bar Roll in 1984. As a barrister he specialised in medical negligence, product liability and defamation.

Justice Beach was appointed Senior Counsel in 2001 and was appointed to the Supreme Court in 2008.

At the Supreme Court he has been the judge in charge of the Major Torts List, hearing significant defamation, product liability and medical negligence cases.

At the Bar, he also contributed his time and expertise to committees including the Counsel Committee, the Professional Indemnity Insurance Committee and the Common Law Bar Association Committee.

He also served as treasurer of the Victorian Bar Council and as chairman of Law Aid.

“I congratulate Justice Beach on his appointment and look forward to his continued service to the Court and his ongoing contribution to the Victorian judicial system,” Mr Clark said.
