Government extends myki contract

The State government last week agreed to pay $700 million to continue the contract with NTT Data, the company that runs Melbourne’s myki train, tram and bus ticketing. The contract does not introduce any new features for myki users.

The government rejected a proposal by Cubic, the company that runs the London Oyster system and many other systems, to take over our ticket system.

This is despite the fact that the myki system has suffered from many problems. While improvements have been made in recent years, it still seems far worse than ticketing systems in other cities, yet the government rejected the opportunity to give Melbourne a better system.

The Liberal Party has asked the Auditor-General to investigate the retendering process. Cubic has also complained to the Auditor-General about how the re-tendering was conducted.
