Appointment of new Deputy Chief Magistrate

Attorney-General Robert Clark today announced the appointment of Magistrate Robert Kumar as a Deputy Chief Magistrate.

Mr Kumar has worked as a Magistrate for the past 26 years. Since 1992 he has served as Regional Coordinating Magistrate at the Broadmeadows Magistrates Court.

Mr Kumar graduated from Law at the University of London in 1973 and was admitted as a Barrister at Lincoln’s Inn two years later.

After serving as a Crown Counsel in Fiji, a Senior Legal Officer in the Public Solicitor’s Office in Victoria and a Senior Legal Officer in the Victoria Legal Aid Commission, Mr Kumar was appointed as a Magistrate in 1986.

As a Magistrate, Mr Kumar has spearheaded a number of initiatives at the Court. In 1992, he led the development and introduction of the Contest Mention System, and in 1996 he implemented the Criminal Diversion Program pilot at the Broadmeadows Magistrates’ Court.

“Mr Kumar’s appointment as a Deputy Chief Magistrate is testament to his abilities, dedication and record of innovation and achievement,” Mr Clark said.

“I am confident that Mr Kumar will continue to make further invaluable contributions to the Magistrates’ Court, and I wish him every success in his new role.”
