Police plea for car theft funding rejected
It was disappointing to learn last week that the State government has rejected a plea by Victoria Police for $300,000 to help fight violent car jackings and other thefts.
The government’s decision to end this funding comes at a time when violent car thefts are soaring, including breaking into homes to steal keys, and deliberately bumping into cars on the road and then attacking the driver when they get out to investigate.
The funding is needed to support the National Motor Vehicle Theft Reduction Council, which helps fight vehicle theft around Australia with data and crime prevention strategies.
Victoria Police sought funding from the government so Victoria could continue to take part in the work of the council. However, the government rejected the Chief Commissioner’s request for this funding to continue.
This decision follows the government weakening bail laws, closing police stations and reducing frontline police numbers, all of which make criminals think the law in Victoria is weak and they can get away with their crimes.
