解雇隐私官员，伤及人民权益

维州政府上周通过一项新法律，新法正式解除维州隐私和数据安全长官。

该职位的重要职责是监督政府不会滥用人民隐私信息，并保障政府部门有足够安全防护应对网路犯罪。

由于现任政府不喜欢隐私安全官员的监督方式，因而透过新法将其解雇，这也意外着隐私官员无法再维护人民权益，保护社会安全。

解雇这名官员等同送出一个讯息，一个给所有监督政府公职人员的讯息，如此解雇监督政府，维护人民权益的官员，此举代表危机，更代表一种威胁。

Sacking of privacy commissioner weakens protections

Last week the Victorian government passed a law to dismiss Victoria’s Privacy and Data Protection Commissioner.

The Commissioner has the important job of making sure the government doesn’t misuse people’s private information it holds, and that government departments have proper data security against cybercrime.

However, the government has sacked the Commissioner because it didn’t like how he was doing his job, meaning the Commissioner can no longer protect the community.

Sacking this Commissioner is also a threat to every other public officer whose job is to ensure the government obeys the law.
